Occurs in offshore waters south to about Otago (Ref. 9258); Chathams Island (Ref. 45493); Snares Shelf and possibly to the Auckland Islands (Ref. 89422). Recorded from bottom trawls off the east coast of South Island (Ref. 58461). Taken in significant quanties as a by-catch of the tuna longline fishery (Ref. 26346). Fins used for soups (Ref. 9258). Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ (Ref. 5755). Also Ref. 244, 89423.
